Chinese New Year Orange Drizzle Cake


This is not a "thing". This is along the same lines as the Chinese New Year Tree that we have. But you know how it is with these major celebrations, you take traditions, and then you make your own traditions. This might be one of them because despite my best attempts to peel, chop and drink the oranges taking residence in my kitchen, I just can't do it all. This is the cold turkey sandwiches of Chinese New Year. Except it's about a million times tastier. It really is so delicious and could be made more festive with sprinkles of gold leaf to decorate etc. But if yours lasts long enough to cool down properly to be decorated then you're doing better than me. This is a cake that never fully cools before someone starts hacking away at it, first a little nibble and then some doorstep wedge sized slices. But that's totally ok, because oranges bring luck and wealth remember. So eat away!  



For the cake:

225g unsalted butter

225g caster sugar

4 eggs

finely grated zest of 2 large oranges

225g self raising flour

For the drizzle topping:

juice of 1 orange

3 tablespoons caster sugar


  1. Preheat oven to 180C and line a loaf tin with baking parchment/greaseproof paper.
  2. In a bowl, beat together the butter and caster sugar until light and creamy.
  3. Add the eggs in one at a time, adding a spoonful of flour at the same time to prevent curdling.
  4. Add the rest of the flour into the bowl, along with the orange zest and mix until well combined.
  5. Spoon mixture into the lined loaf tin, smoothing the top.
  6. Bake for approximately 45 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean.
  7. Whilst the cake is cooling in the loaf tin, mix together the orange juice and caster sugar for the drizzle topping.
  8. With a fork, prick the cake all over the top and then gently pour the drizzle topping over. The drizzle should sink into the cake, and as the cake cools the sugar will recrystallize to form a slightly crispy outside. Only remove from the loaf once completely cool.
